King Charles Spira. Pedicularis sceptrum carolinum. Olof Rudbeck dy. found the plant in 1695 and gave it the name to pay homage to Charles XI.

Curlew. Numenius arguata. Both parents are helped to incubate the four eggs. One of them guards the nest when the other incubates. The females move south at midsummer and the male takes care of the young until they are ready to fly in late summer.

Berguddens Fyr at Holmön. The inhabitants of Holmön are known for their craftsmanship and boat building skills. Every year a competition is organized, rowing with mailboats from the island to Björkö in Finland.

Mareographer in Ratan.

With a mareograph, you measure the water level and this has been done in Ratan until 1965. The mareograph in Ratan is from the 1890s. Outside Ratan, in Sävar, was the battle that resulted in Sweden losing Finland at the peace of Fredrikshamn.

Bygdeå Klockstapel. The church in Bygdeå is one of the oldest stone churches in northern Sweden. The oldest parts are from the 15th century.

The Swedish Ski Museum is located at the open air museum Gammlia in Umeå. The oldest ski in the world is in the collection.

The cable car between Boliden and Kristineberg. The longest cable car in the world, 96 km long.

The cable car transported ore until 1987. Nowadays you can travel the route Mensträsk and Örträsk, a trip that takes 2 hours.

Västerbotten cheese. In Ånäset, 100,000 Västerbotten cheeses are aged for 12 months. The cheese came about by chance. Eleonora Lindström worked in the 1870s at the dairy in Burträsk. She did not have enough control over the cheese making this day and everything was counted as a failure and was forgotten in the warehouse. A few months later, the cheese was tasted and it was delicious.

Umeå , The city of the birches.

There is a lot in Umeå - not just birches. Here is a rich cultural life for example The Sami Week and Norrland operahouse.

Bonnstan. The farmers town. Every farmer in the parish who had a long way to church had a house  where he stayed during the church holidays. The town were established because since the end of the 17th century there was a duty to attend church. Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and Mickels' Mass where the major holidays. The service could last for more than two hours. Mikaeli was the last cottage weekend of the year and was well attended by all ages.

Skellefteå County Council has Sweden's largest national church. It´s from1485 and was rebuilt in1800. The church contains several sculptures from the Middle Ages.

Storfors power plant, one of the largest hydropower plants in Europe. It is located where the Vindelälven and Umeälven meet. The power plant was built in 1955.

Finnros Arctic Rose

Sweden's largest occurrence of Arctic rose is found in a nature reserve, N. Klemensnäs in Västerbotten. It is only available in a few places in Sweden. The rose blooms for about a week in early July.
