Tomten

Most of us may know the first verse of Viktor Rydberg's “Tomten": " Midwinter’s nightly frost is hard Brightly the stars are beaming...", but then? The poem contains no less than eleven verses, which are about what Tomten had to do during the dark long winter night. These 11 verses are included  to the weave “Tomten” but we can already reveal what you will see as the weaving progresses. From the top down, the weave shows the following: The stars sparkle and glimmer in the midwinter night with snow-covered pines and firs. The snow is white on the roof and Tomten is standing there so gray against the barn door and ponders on the riddle of life, he gives that up and start devoting himself to the farm work of the night. He goes to check the food storage, toolshed and all the locks. In the stable Pålle, the horse gets his crib filled with scented clover. Forgoten is harness and whip. Tomten checks on the rooster in the henhouse and his friend Karo the dog, who wakes up and wags the tail. Tomten also goes to check on the master and to the nursery where he has seen the generations follow each other through many years. Eventually, Tomten goes to the attic where he has a living space.
Clear is the moon, and the snow-drifts shine,
Glistening white, on fir and pine,
Covers on rooflets making.
None but Tomten is awake.
